The Real Royalty of Camelot
Opening gate scene
Good King Uther welcomes all to the 30th anniversary of the great celebration known as the Hoggetowne fair. After the opening song, the king dies (an overly dramatic – hammed up death), leaving his bickering children (the bad guys) to divide up the kingdom.
Scene 1: Chess happens
Uther’s warring children (Morgana, Mordred and Guinevere) arrive, each is accompanied by a band of iconic warriors – such as Knights, Barbarians, Black Isle Maidens. They find Merlin is there who tells all that the king has left everything to his favored champion Arthur, who enters with the white side nobility. This leads to a melee. After the Merlin stops the brawl he insists they play chess for the kingdom and the black side agrees to work tighter to defeat Arthur. Arthur wins only for the Lady of the lake to appear and declaim that the only way to be king is to pull the sword form the stone – the black side heartily agrees and they arrange to meet again to try to pull the sword.
Scene 2 (Option A): A sword, a stone, and a four way
All four factions arrive to find a sword mounted in stone on the middle of the chess board. The lady of the lake tells them they must play a game of four way chess to fight to the sword, the first to pull it wins. (The sides are each on one of the long edges or each on a corner depending on which game looks better and runs smoother). As fights are called, different people try to pull the sword in vain – including Arthur. However when he and one of the veiled Moorish women fight they both go for the sword and pull it together – they are destined to rule tighter and the woman is revealed to be Guinevere. At this the other bad guys object and a melee ensues with Arthur and Guinevere tossing Excalibur back and forth between them to overcome there adversaries.
Scene 2 (Option B): Hoggetowne’s got talent
Having won the kingdom through the chess game Arthur now needs to form his knightly counsel and in a gesture of reconciliation invites all to participate. The evil leads all claim the right to judge as well, since they are lords and have royal blood. The leads take to the stage to pass judgment on the contestants. Most will be fights although the odd signer or dancer may come out only to be quickly removed. The judges will make commentary in the style of American idol or Americas got talent. After the first 6 to 8 fights the audience will be allowed to choose the last fight combinations. These champion fights, complete with interview after by merlin, will be Arthurs knights. Arthur sheepishly explains that as he is a new king all he has is a large round table – will that do?
